The Hollow

Something is eating the valley

The Hollow came up out of the black lake and spread down the river road, and where it goes the years come loose.

A frontier fort is stuck in the night after a raid. A county seat burns forever. A coal camp freezes in the winter of the explosions. A lakeside amusement park runs its lights over the water and never closes. The valley’s great creatures are full of it now: a three-headed black dog, a hellbender the size of a flatboat, a two-headed eagle rotting in the sky.

She wakes under the great sycamore, weak, with pieces of her missing. She picks up her tomahawks and goes hunting.

How it plays

Symphony of the Night horror, in the Appalachian mountains

I.

Break them. Become them.

Every boss she breaks gives back a piece of her. Every creature she frees gives her its shape.

Five forms. Each one opens the map, and each one fights.

  • The Black DogRun on three sets of jaws. Charge through cracked walls and logjams, and tear armor off anything big.
  • The Carrion EagleTake the sky on rotting wings. Two heads, two screams, and a dive that breaks what it touches.
  • The MistDrift through bars, grates and battlefield fog. Blows pass through you. Ride a monster from the inside.
  • The HellbenderSwim the river and the flooded rooms, cling to wet rock, and drag big things under.
  • The RootSink into the soil, move under everything, and burst up into whatever is standing on you.
Gameplay: an armor plate bursts off the Ironclad in a shower of sparks against a burning sunset
Gameplay: the Ironclad's full-screen painted super move tears through the arena while the huntress braces below
II.

Massive, and they come apart

The enemies are huge, and they break.

Plates fly off, limbs go, and they fight differently without them. Every boss has a tell you can learn, a window you can punish, and a painted super move that takes over the screen. More than twenty of them wait along the river road.

Open the bestiary

Gameplay: the huntress climbs wooden stairs at a dark midway as a lamp-spider hangs in the air
III.

One valley. Every bad year at once.

One connected, hand-painted valley, and then the whole map again, turned upside down.

Frontier bottomland and burying grounds, a burning county seat, coal camps in the snow, and a lakeside midway that never closes. Every place is painted by hand.

Walk the valley

Gameplay: a mossy stone statue of an armored smith with a plow, standing over the huntress at sunset
Gameplay: the huntress meets a townsman on a foggy lane beside a log stockade
IV.

Towns that lie to you

Four towns, each stuck in its worst year. Some people tell the truth. Some lie. Some grieve. Some are ghosts who don’t know it yet.

Shops, inns, barter and tasks. Sleep at the inn and the night brings out different people. And the oldest tree in every area talks: ask once for a story, twice for the way on.

Gameplay: a burst of gold light erupts from a felled root creature as the huntress levels up
V.

Grow stronger the old way

Levels, gear, drops, and parts you break off monsters to forge with.

Tomahawks to throw and call back, then axes, swords, shields and more. Spells with command inputs. The kill that levels you up goes off in gold.
